DUBAI OPERA, DUBAI
ICONS OF THE WORLD
May 1, 2026 12:00 am
Doors Open: 12:00 amFew voices in history have carried passion, tragedy, love and power like these two. Oum Kalthoum and Maria Callas were each called the voice of her world – Kalthoum, the eternal sound of the Arab spirit, and Callas, the embodiment of operatic drama. In this extraordinary concert, the UAE National Orchestra pays tribute to their voices in a dialogue between Arabic tarab and Western opera, revealing how two traditions, though distant in form, are united in feeling.
The evening opens with Oum Kalthoum’s timeless music reimagined through orchestral fantasy in Tarab Symphonique and masterpieces such as Alf Leila wa Leila and Al Atlal. Her music, steeped in poetry and emotion, meets Callas’s great arias by Verdi and Puccini, from La Traviata to Tosca, operatic art at its most dramatic and human.
In the second half, East meets West as the two worlds intertwine. Kalthoum’s Enta Omri flows from Bizet’s Habanera, while Verdi’s Ritorna vincitor! from Aida echoes the grandeur of Cairo’s operatic past. The concert culminates in a shared moment as both divas’ voices are woven together in new symphonic duets, Puccini’s O mio babbino caro and Kalthoum’s Fakarouni, arranged by Nadim Tarabay for orchestra.
Icons of the World is a celebration of emotion, artistry and womanhood. It is music that transcends time, place and language, reminding us that the heart hears no borders.
